2022 Madisonville Kentucky Work Day 3

 Mission trip 6/29/2022 Madisonville Kentucky

The day started out with a beautiful clear sky without a cloud in it. Of course we knew what that meant, it would all too soon be hot where we would be working in direct sunlight. We all gave Mary Rae hugs goodbye because she had to leave early from the mission trip. Just to show what a nice lady she is she went on a final shopping trip for groceries  for the kitchen before she left.

This time, instead of talking about what my team did, I will let Kyle take over and talk about what they did today. Team Carmen was still laying block, almost finished with the outer wall of the foundation, but there's still the inner basement wall to build up. Mel and Kerrin were supposed to be going to a new group today, but ended up just staying with Carmen the whole day. Mel broke a shovel in a cement mixer  and broke it.  Thank God she only came out with a sore shoulder. Right across the field from the site was a herd of cows, which Kyle unsuccessfully tried petting after some encouragement from Rick.

Team Carmen

Team Elvis is currently framing and putting up walls of their house, after waiting for the tools and supplies that they needed. Susan "crossed the lake" and tried something new, learning how to use a nailgun. She was hesitant to leave team Bob yesterday, but she enjoyed working with team Elvis. As Peter says, you have to be flexible, whether it's learning something new or moving to a new team.

And now the much anticipated report from team Bob. Today we left off where we started yeasterday, and we continued to be helped by the New Salem work group from North Carolina, and today they helped us finish the outside wall framing of the house.  Their names, in case you wanted to know, are Joan, Alex, Bill, Hudson, and Frank.  We even had enough time to frame the wall for a couple of the interior rooms. We expect to be doing a similar job tomorrow, and then we might join team Elvis on Friday, which will then become the new team Bob at the site since Elvis and Carrie are leaving on Friday, and the New Salem team will be going home for the holiday weekend. In the morning, Katie from Fuller dropped by and I even took a picture of her holding a sign representing  the Fuller foundation, which she put in front of the house. And in the afternoon, Zach from Fuller dropped by at Bob's request, because he had many questions about the blueprints. And then Zach oppened up to Bob about his own spiritual journey and how the Holy Spirit heal him inside and outside. The new home owner Debbi dropped by with her two daughters to see our progress and give us further praises and encouragement.  Yes the sun was really hot, and we all received a nice tan or nasty sunburn.  Bob let us leave at 2:30 due to the hot conditions.

On the way home Pastor Jeff treated us all to Dairy Queen.  I had the medium strawberry icecream shake, it was very refreshing and delicious. Connie met a couple that were eating who were very appreciative of us being there and helping with the disaster recovery. That Dairy Queen store received some damage from the store as well. I took a picture of a poster on the wall showing the aftereffects of the storm. The nearby carwash is still just a wall of bricks with no roof, so not all businesses survived. Since the vans were needed at the other worksites, I was able to ride in the Winner mobile with Pastor Bob, which was owned by Rick and Lorene.  Pastor Bob and Lorene swapped many wonderful family stories, some of which almost brought me to tears.  Mike, Jeff, Dana, and Connie rode in another car.

Of course, when we came back to our host church we all had much needed showers, and for some of us even a nap. Our dinner was made by our Kitchen Queen, Mel, and her helpers. There were sloppy joes, burgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, potato salad, tater tots, fries, and baked beans. Tonight, after dinner, Carmen led devotions, and we talked apout a passage from The Sermon on the Mount that talked about Christians being like salt from the Earth and the light of the world. One touching comment by Carmen was when he said that we have been created in the image of God, and we should let others see Him in all of us. And one important message that we have all learned this week is that while the rest of the world might have already forgotten about the tornado that happened just in December in this area, PDA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance) has not forgotten them, and we should help remind them that God will not forget them either. Some of the kids, and the adults, are still terrified when any storm starts up. People were still cleaning up the damage and debris from the tornado, when a bad ice storm hit and they had to clean everything up again.

Mike from Midland, who is on team Bob told a story about a local mission trip that he was part of. His crew had to carry heavy fill to fill up a hole without any equipment.

The previous mission team lost a Turquoise ring somewhere in the church, so if someone who is currently working here finds it, please let someone know so it can be returned.
